It can be a challenge in the Cowichan Valley to get counselling help for your teen. Parents are often frustrated with the lack of resources available to help their teenagers when they are struggling with drugs, alcohol, fluctuating moods or trying to find a direction in life.

Adolescence is a time of transition and many teens find it difficult to get through to the other side. In ancient cultures there were rituals to mark the change from childhood to adulthood, but teens today seem stuck in a no man’s land with little guidance as to how to grow into their next stage of life. This feeling of “stuckness” may show itself as depression or anxiety or changes in behaviour. You may notice your child retreating into their own world. Maybe they are spending countless hours on the computer at night, or their attendance at school has changed. While it is normal for teens to avoid their parents, this tendency to retreat can become chronic, spiraling down to a point where even they realize they don’t know how to get out of it.

Teenagers usually don’t want to see a counsellor. Besides the fact that counselling is an unfamiliar experience, they have a difficult time seeing how therapy can help. The idea of telling their problems to a stranger can be intimidating, and at first it often is. But once a comfortable relationship has been established, I have seen therapy be an avenue for support, healing, and change that can make a huge difference in a person’s life. As a result of working with adolescents in different environments for over twenty years, I have developed an understanding of the complexities teens face in their lives and the fact that change is a process that can take time. In my work with adolescent clients, I offer them a space where they have the opportunity to explore their current experience of life and chart out a path for changes they want to make.
